The organization started in 2002 when members of the Knoxville Education Foundation began exploring the establishment of a scholarship program to benefit KHS graduates in their pursuit of a post-secondary education. Our stated goal is to provide a scholarship to every Knoxville High School graduate who applies for financial aid in the pursuit of post-secondary education. Whether the student plans on attending a traditional two year or four- year college or university, technical school, or a series of course work designed to provide a particular skill in a field of their choice, we will provide financial help. Every student, no matter their grade point average, or participation in extra-curricular activities, will receive a scholarship as long as they fully complete an application by the well-publicized due date.
The Knoxville Panther Scholarship Foundation is a fully qualified tax-deductible charitable organization with 501(C) (3) status under the Internal Revenue Service Code. We partner with local organizations, businesses, churches, and individuals to combine their scholarship awards with ours and present those gifts at the annual scholarship awards night in May.
We celebrated the seventeenth anniversary of the Knoxville Panther Scholarship Foundation in 2020. Since 2002 the number of graduating senior applicants we have received totals 1,342 and every one of those applicants has been awarded a scholarship for a dollar amount totaling over $840,000. Additionally, our Endowment Fund has grown from zero in 2004 to over three quarters of a million dollars today.
The exceptional generosity of the citizens of Knoxville and of Knoxville High School alumni from all over the country has allowed us to expand our scholarship program to levels we could have never dreamed of seventeen years ago. Seven years ago, as a result of the generosity of Don and Margaret Long, we began awarding $500 second year scholarships to every Knoxville High School graduate who applied for a scholarship to help fund their second year of post-secondary education.
In 2015, for the first time, our Scholarship Foundation began offering third year scholarships to Knoxville High School graduates entering their third year of post-secondary education and in 2016 expanded our scholarship program to include fourth year students. . In 2020 we provided post-secondary scholarships to 84 students who will be entering their third or fourth year of post-secondary education. In 2020 we awarded a total of 154 KHS graduates with scholarships for a total monetary value of $104,300. All of these post-secondary scholarships are funded by growth from our endowment fund and by contributions made during our annual fund raising appeal.
Just think, this Foundation, this community, our alumni, are providing a scholarship to EVERY Knoxville High School graduate who completes a scholarship request in a timely manner during the ENTIRE four years of their post-secondary education.
In a typical year, and this year certainly has been anything but typical, at our annual awards night held at the Knoxville Performing Arts Center on the third Wednesday in May, we team up with all local organizations, businesses, churches and individuals to host our annual awards celebration. This year, a virtual presentation was made to honor the seventy members of the KHS Class of 2020. A video of this presentation can be found on YouTube at the following link:

We offer scholarships in several categories. Honor Scholarships are awarded using earnings from our Endowment Fund and by using contributions received as part of our annual fund-raising appeal.
Our fifty-nine named scholarships are funded by organizations, businesses, individuals and by past graduating classes of Knoxville High School through what are known as Panther Pride Scholarships. In 2020 we awarded Panther Pride Scholarships from the KHS graduating classes of 1961, 1964, 1980 and 1990.
We also award forty-eight Endowed Scholarships. These scholarships are funded through earnings on a one-time donation of $15,000 or by a series of donations totaling $15,000 or more made to our Endowment Fund. These donations allow us to offer endowed scholarships each year without any further contributions required.
I would urge you to go to our website at kpsfoundatioon.org and click on the scholarships and news tabs to learn about the various scholarships offered by the Knoxville Panther Scholarship Foundation. There you will also read about the many options available to you to help support this Foundation which is dedicated to encouraging post-secondary education for Knoxville High School graduates.
All memorial gifts and all funds that we receive from individuals who have remembered the Knoxville Panther Scholarship Foundation in their estate are put into our endowment fund. Earnings on these funds provide a permanent means of celebrating the life of a loved one by providing scholarships for future generations of Knoxville High school graduates. Please keep the Foundation in your thoughts when it comes time to celebrate your life or the life of a loved one.
